Welcome to “The Adult Improver Series”

The Adult Improver Series at Perpetual Chess is an ongoing series of interviews with chess amateurs in which they share their chess stories and offer their hard-won advice for improvement. I began this series in 2018 after hearing Andrzej Kryzdwa’s amazing story of breaking through a lengthy chess plateau by elevating his chess training routine. The Adult Improver series quickly found an audience, and I have gotten to hear some great stories and tips from enthusiastic chess amateurs. They are now amongst the most popular Perpetual Chess episodes.

These episodes seem to resonate most with those who are newer to chess, and those who are “in the lab” spending many hours per week working on their games. As of 2022, I aim to release 10 Adult Improver episodes per year.

This page lists all of the “Adult Improver” episodes and will update whenever there are new ones. 👉👉

While you are here at this page, I will share a few chess improvement tips and resources:

Lastly, if you would like a few chess improvement tips before you go, here are a few suggestions:

  1. As renowned author and trainer, GM Jacob Aagaard told me, daily practice is vital for chess. Learning chess is like learning an instrument or a language, and you never want it far from your subconscious mind. It is better to do a little chess per day, than to periodically binge chess.

  2. There is no “bad” way to study chess, but tactics frequently decide games below the 2000 level, so solving puzzles should always be a point of emphasis. Chessable has an amazing array of tactics resources for players of any level. (Disclosure- they are a long time sponsor of the podcast, but I am also a fan and user of their courses)

  3. The beauty of chess is you can “learn by doing” so playing itself is beneficial, especially if you play a focused, slower game and spend some time reviewing your losses with the game review algorithms of Chess.com or Lichess. It is also helpful to take a “big picture” look at your chess tendencies. Chess.com’s insights feature is helpful for this, as is Aimchess.com. (Disclosure- Perpetual Chess is proud to be sponsored by both Chess.com and Aimchess. You can help support the podcast by becoming a Chess.com Member using this link, and if you sign up for Aimchess, you can use the code “Perpetual30” to save 30%)

  4. Whatever chess improvement regimen you choose, please be sure that it is fun for you. Chess is a hobby, after all.
